One of Maui Land & Pineapple Company, Inc.’s (ML&P) planned holistic communities is Pulelehua in West Maui. Pulelehua, or “butterfly” in Hawaiian, will foster an authentic sense of place in a traditional neighborhood and provide a quality life experience for those who live, work and visit there.

ML&P is committed to creating Pulelehua to meet the acute need for quality affordable housing in West Maui and offering it to our employees and other working families of Maui. ML&P intends for approximately 50% of the housing at Pulelehua to be affordable housing, based on 80% to 160% of the HUD median family income on Maui. Affordable housing choices will include home ownership as well as rental units. ML&P is taking strict measures to prevent speculation from displacing the long-term availability of moderately priced housing for people who work in West Maui.

Pulelehua is based on traditional neighborhood design that features a mix of residential, commercial, agricultural and civic uses. Trails and paths will free residents of their dependence on cars and encourage them to walk or bike to parks, shops, school and neighbors’ homes. The design has also been informed by dialogue with community members and organizations, so Pulelehua is shaped by the real needs and desires of Maui residents.
